Unfortunately, I don't bake bread from scratch nearly as often as I used to. I do use the bread machine regularly, but it's just not the same. I grew up baking bread from scratch and I want Trevor to learn the same skills, so we made soft pretzels together. It was a lot of fun.

Egg wash.
A touch of salt.
Seriously yum. And easy enough for a 5 year old.
I'm not sure where my recipe originally came from. It's probably from Fleischmann's. They're the ones who paid for my Chicago trip and I have a bunch of their cookbooks. I've been very loyal to them over the years.
Soft Pretzels
1 pkg yeast 1-1/2 tsp. sugar
1-1/2 c. water 4 c. flour
3/4 tsp. salt 1 egg
Heat water to approximately 110˚F and add yeast. Stir until dissolved. Add salt, sugar, and flour. Knead until smooth and elastic. Divide dough into 24 pieces. Roll each piece into a pencil-shaped roll, approximately 16 inches long. Shape as pretzels. Place on an ungreased pan. Beat egg and brush over the tops of the pretzels. Sprinkle lightly with salt. Bake at 400˚F for 12 to 15 minutes.
