One Little Word - 2015

This is my fifth year participating in Ali Edwards' One Little Word. In 2011, I chose the word Balance. In 2012, I chose the word Celebrate. 2013 was Try. Last year was Enjoy. Each One Little Word experience has been very positive for me.

I've been thinking about my 2015 word for a long time. After careful consideration, I chose Relax.

I am not good at relaxing. I am happiest when I am being productive. I like finishing things, I like accomplishing things, and I like checking things off a list. It is hard for me to do many of the things that other people consider relaxing. Window shopping, a spa day, or a movie marathon all sound like torture to me. I relax by scrapping, crafting, cooking, and reading (non-fiction). In each case, I'm working toward an end result - a completed layout, a gift that's ready to give, a meal to enjoy, or knowledge gained. Doing something with nothing to show for it is very, very frustrating to me.

I really fought with myself before committing to Relax as my One Little Word. I find it incredibly irritating when other people tell me to relax. I can't relax on command. (Can anyone?) Obviously, I'm not trying to spend all of 2015 feeling irritated. But OLW is internal, not external. No one will be telling me to relax just because I publicly announced it as my OLW (at least, I certainly hope not). Choosing Relax is more about reminding myself to make time for what I love to do and to work on ways to make the must-do's more relaxing.

Each year, I choose a new One Little Word, but I never get rid of the previous ones. Balance, Celebrate, Try and Enjoy will be as much a part of my 2015 as Relax. There's a lot of overlap between them. Here is Relax with the other tags.  I love them.

Have you chosen One Little Word for 2015?  I'd love to hear what it is!

  2. I think it would be hard to choose a word each year. I've never done OLW but I do like the concept. Your tags are so cute. Good luck with your word! I do love a good memoir but there's a wonderful world of fiction out there. The best way possible to relax. I promise!

    1. I actually read a ton of fiction, but most of it is from the children's section. I read 99% of the books that Trevor picks out, as we enjoy discussing them and we have similar taste. :)

  3. I have no problem relaxing my body, but my mind is a completely different story!
I'm what you call and "overthinker"... and unfortunately a lot of that "overthinking" leans towards "thinking the worst" .
Being inside my head is exhausting sometimes!
I need to adopt "relax" as my OLW as well, but I already know I will not be able to live by it!
    Good Luck!

  6. I adore your tag banner!! I also adore that you keep each word, each year. It's really a beautiful concept, and like you said, something to keep in mind. I've never done OLW ... I don't know if I'd be able to narrow it down to just one. I'm often too wordy as it is! :) I really do love this concept ... maybe I need to read more about how to pick THE word.

    1. They say the word picks you, and I think that's true. If you go back and read through your own blog posts, you'll probably find one comment, one complaint, one common thread that links your triumphs or struggles together. That's the word.
