43 New-to-Me ... #10 Boondi

I'm making great progress with my 43 New to Me album, as it's only been about 7 weeks and I'm already on page 10.


New-to-me food #10 was boondi. I found this package at a local Indian market. Like the papdi, this product is made of gram flour. Unlike the papdi, there were no mystery seeds (fruit pods?) to mar the taste. Unfortunately, the taste was marred somewhat by the oil used to cook these. They were quite greasy and there was a not-quite-fresh taste to the oil. Too bad, as I think they would have been pretty good otherwise. I gave them a four.

  1. How is it cooked?! Looks interesting... bummer the oil ruined it for you!

    1. We talked about that as we tried it and our consensus was that it was probably cooked like a funnel cake with the batter pressed or dripped through a colander of sorts and into a vat of oil.

  2. So it's meant to be eaten just out of the bag? Indian food typically has lots of spices.

    1. It's typically turned into a sweet or savory snack. We tried it out of the bag as well as with other foods. The old oil taste could be masked with lots of spices.

    3. Yes, the oil was definitely not as fresh as it should have been. Whether that was the case before or after packaging, I'm not sure.
