As I wrap up Bunny Week 2018, I want to encourage any of you who are thinking about adopting a rabbit to do your research and commit to providing a loving, indoor, free-range home for 10+ years. Rabbits are intelligent, social, and deserving of the same level of care as a dog or a cat. You'll be rewarded with a loyal companion that deeply enriches your life.
When we adopted Trouble in 2011, we were clueless about taking care of a house rabbit. Fortunately, through the guidance of Contra Costa Rabbit Rescue and the House Rabbit Society, we learned exactly what you need to best care for a rabbit who is a beloved family pet.
Rabbit Supply List
- Safe and comfortable housing (Trouble has a large x-pen for nighttime only)
- A roomy litterbox (this one has worked well for us)
- Rabbit-safe litter (we like Carefresh natural)
- Food and water dishes (we use these ramekins with this dispenser as a back-up)
- Unlimited timothy or other grass hay (NOT with fruits or other additives and NOT alfalfa)
- Healthy pellets (Oxbow is our go-to. Trouble gets a small amount twice a day)
- A carrier for vet trips (ours is similar to this one)
- Fresh veggies (here's a handy list)
- A nail clipper (ours looks like this and was sold as a trimmer for cats)
- Comb (the HairBuster is the best)
- Somewhere to hide (Trouble likes his igloo and his Cottontail Cottage)
